Referee Assignment in Sports Leagues

چکیده
Optimization in sports is a field of increasing interest. Combinatorial optimization techniques have been applied e.g. to game scheduling and playoff elimination. A common problem usually found in sports management is the assignment of referees to games already scheduled. There are a number of rules and objectives that should be taken into account when referees are assigned to games. We address a simplified version of a referee assignment problem common to many amateur leagues of sports such as soccer, baseball, and basketball. The problem is formulated by integer programming and its decision version is proved to be NP-complete. To tackle real-life large instances of the referee assignment problem, we propose a three-phase heuristic approach based on a constructive procedure, a repair heuristic to make solutions feasible, and a local search heuristic to improve feasible solutions. Numerical results on realistic instances are presented and discussed.

Measuring Parity in Sports Leagues with Draws: Further Comments
This paper re-examines the calculation of the relative standard deviation (RSD) measure of competitive balance in leagues in which draws are possible outcomes. Some key conclusions emerging from the exchange between Cain and Haddock (2006) and Fort (2007) are reversed. There is no difference, for any given points assignment scheme, between the RSD for absolute points compared to percentages of ...
متن کاملReferee assignment in the Chilean football league using integer programming and patterns
The referee assignment problem in sports scheduling is addressed for the First Division of the Chilean professional football league using integer linear programming. Various criteria that enhance the transparency and objectivity of the assignment process are considered. As well as better balances in the number of matches each referee must officiate, the frequency each is assigned to a given tea...
متن کاملComparison of Home Advantage in College and Professional Team Sports in the United States.
Home advantage in seven American college team sports (baseball, basketball, football, hockey, lacrosse, soccer and women's basketball) was compared with professional leagues in the United States for the same sports and for the same time period. A total of 81,063 college games and 22,477 professional games were analyzed for the four seasons 2006-07 to 2009-10. There was a significant home advant...
متن کاملWinning and Other Determinants of Revenue in North America's Major Professional Sports Leagues
This study investigates recent determinants of revenue in North America’s four major professional sports leagues. Estimates reveal that revenue is positively associated with winning in baseball (MLB), basketball (NBA), and hockey (NHL), but not in football (NFL). The returns to winning are not diminishing as commonly assumed, which casts doubt on the uncertainty of outcome hypothesis, and diffe...
متن کاملThe growth and nancial status of professional sports in North America: insights for English soccer leagues?
An overview of the nancial status of professional sports leagues in North America is provided. It reveals that they face similar challenges to those confronting professional soccer teams in England: most teams report annual operating losses; costs, primarily attributed to players’ salaries, are accelerating at a level which outstrips the large growth in revenues that is also occurring; and the...
